BI Competency Center (BICC)
An everyday more popular way of overcoming encountered difficulties on Business Intelligence solutions, is conforming a competency center for BI (BICC). A BICC can vary in dedication since in large organizations with enough volume of project it can be justified economically; nevertheless in most companies BICC is a virtual inter-departmental organization that meets regularly to coordinate policies. This BICC must have active members from various departments to assure that all the key problems are identified and that they are approached properly.
A BI competency center must approach a variety of organizational problems, as are some of the following:
- Identification y prioritizing potential projects
- Appropriate software selection for specific projects
- Implementation of policies and organizational standards over software use
- Establish standards for support levels
- Support the definition of specification processes
- Check the progress of the projects
- Analyze and capitalize experiences
- Coordinate and promote the quality and data initiatives
However, the BI competency center is a relatively new trend that parallel to the trend of standardization of the BI software and the trend towards Suites. This is why details vary from one company to another. In some cases, the BI competition centers can also assume the responsibility of offering support to users of BI solutions or even play a role in the implementation, but usually takes the role of assessor or coordinator.
